Essential Oils and a Primal Lifestyle

Essential oils have been a small part of my life for many years – a drop here in there. But, recently they’ve worked their way into many facets of our family’s day to day life. Here are some ways essential oils are supporting our wellness and wellbeing in line with our 7 elements to a primal lifestyle.

1. Nutrition and Health

Healthy oils are emphasized in the framework of a primal diet and my family has been enjoying some of our favorite recipes, such as Gluten Free Cookie Dough Bites, made with the Vitality dietary essential oil line.

Reducing environmental irritants has been a top priority of mine. Thus, using chemical free cleaners and replacing many suspect products in our medicine cabinet with safe essential oil products and DIY “potions” has been key to establishing a healthy home.

2. Sleep

We all know that sleep is important and getting an average of 8 hours is ideal for most people. However, even when you allow yourself that time, it can be tough to quiet the mind and body to allow yourself to drift into dreamland. Diffusing calming essential oils or using a small swipe of lavender on the back of the neck has really helped relax the boys, as well as my husband and I, as we settle in for a good night’s sleep.

3. Exercise

We are dedicated to fitness and CrossFit style workouts and with that comes just a bit of soreness. Making our own pain relief cream with coconut oil, copaiba and panaway has helped ease the breakdown of muscle and keep us in action.

4. Touch the Earth

“Seed to Seal” is the Young Living Essential Oils standard for essential oil purity and authenticity. They are the only company that owns the majority of the farms used to produce oils and therefore they have full quality control. It doesn’t get any closer to the Earth than this!

5. Play

One of my favorite memories as a child was playing with homemade play dough! The therapeutic benefits of creative expression are just as important for adults as children. One way to reap these benefits and engage with your children is to make your own essential oil aromatherapy play dough! Try THIS recipe with 6 – 8 drops of your favorite essential oil.

6. Reduce Stress

One of my favorite techniques for reducing stress is meditation! The aspects of various essential oils can help bring different elements out of your meditation practice (relaxation, inspiration, thankfulness, peace, etc.). An awareness of the smells around you also helps bring presence to the mind. Sacred frankincense, Gratitude and Inspiration are examples of oils to diffuse during meditation.

Another one of my favorite ways to reduce stress is taking an epsom salt bath before bed. Adding a drop or two of lavender to a warm tub adds a relaxing effect.

7. Seek Social Support

Being part of my “secret” essential oils Facebook group to learn, ask questions, and share experiences has given me a community based support system.

If you would like to share how you are using essential oils, have questions, want to be added to the secret Facebook group, or are interested in purchasing oils, please send me an email ( and I’ll be happy to help!
