Who is this kids cooking curriculum for?

Pros and cons of the kids cooking course
I knew my ten and twelve year old boys were probably ready to jump into the Advanced level of the Kids Cook Real Food course, but the three of us went through all three stages to make sure we gained any helpful tips, strategies, and skills along the way.
Now we can share what we loved (and didn’t) with you!
What I liked (and disliked) about Kids Cook Real Food
In all honesty, Katie Kimball’s cooking course is incredibly well thought out. The highlights for me include:
- Securing basic age-appropriate kitchen skills.
- Allowing kids safe exploration in the kitchen.
- Providing key phrases to help kids and adults remember safety and technique tips.
- The emphasis on real food ingredients!
- Adjustments for allergies or dietary needs.
- Flexibility with ingredients — you can use what you have on hand.
- The ability to move through the course at your own pace.
- Smooth curriculum flow from class to class and level to level.
- Helpful strategies for adults to successfully guide kids.
- Providing a strong skill base to build from and encouraging kitchen creativity!
What could be improved?
If you have older kids, there are some video sections that may move slower than they would like. For younger ages, the slow pace is great — there’s no sense of urgency or pressure, but tweens and teens may be anxious to move forward.
In our family, I was able to convince my boys to approach the videos with patience and seek out the tidbits that were helpful for them. The videos range from just a few minutes to one advanced lesson that is twenty minutes. The times are clearly stated, so you can easily set a precedent.
What my kids liked (and disliked) about Kids Cook Real Food
My kids don’t have strong aspirations of being chefs. Despite their comfort in the kitchen, I wasn’t sure how excited they would be to embark on an actual cooking course. To my surprise, they were eager and looking forward to each class. They were excited to find out what new skills they would learn, and what they would cook each day.
I asked my twelve year old what he liked best about Kids Cook Real Food:
The recipes were fun to make and tasted great.
I like how there were options given so we could be creative.
The words and phrases used were helpful.
I feel like I learned new techniques and got better at certain tasks.
I have more kitchen skills now, like knowing how to make a white sauce.
I really liked how the different levels all came together to make a snack or meal.
My ten year old had this to say about what he liked most:
I liked feeling like I contributed towards the family meal.
I learned that if you let garlic rest after crushing or pressing it, it becomes more nutritious.
I feel more confident and independent — I don’t need to ask for help as much.
I enjoyed learning about homemade jello, and how to brown ground beef by myself.
Learning how to make different seasoning blends was fun, and practicing different strategies for peeling veggies.
The one piece that both boys said they didn’t care for was that the tone and language of the course is sometimes geared towards younger kids.
While they would have preferred to be spoken to at their own level, they also understood why it was mostly directed towards younger children.
After completing the eight lessons in Kids Cook Real Food, the boys adjusted a bonus lesson and recipe from the course to make a potato salad to suit their tastes and use ingredients we had on hand. It was a beautiful way to show off their new skills and confidence.
Bottom line: Is Kids Cook Real Food worth it?
YES! Give your kids the gift of love and appreciation for real food. One of the best ways to do this is by connecting with THEM and healthy ingredients in the kitchen.
