A creamy, healing latte comes in handy any time of year, and this turmeric chai always hits the spot for me.
Turmeric is a powerful real food ingredient that contains a chemical compound, curcumin, which is one of the most powerful anti-inflammatory herbs. It’s often the prominent ingredient in curries, providing the distinguishable golden color.
Turmeric has been heavily studied with profound effects on health.
It has been shown to significantly help with management of:
- IBS, Chrone’s disease, ulcerative colitis
- Cholesterol regulation
- and more
If you are currently taking any medications, it is important to check with your doctor to make sure there aren’t any contraindications with turmeric (such as its anti-coagulation effect), especially at higher doses.
Here’s a great read for more information on this medicinal food: 10 Turmeric Benefits: Superior to Medications? from Dr. Josh Axe.
The flavor combination of ginger, cinnamon, and clove is one of my favorites, and I find these spices balance the taste of turmeric perfectly.
This primal diet turmeric chai recipe also calls for the addition of ground black pepper. Its bioactive compound, piperine, has been shown to boost the absorption of curcumin by up to 2000%. Ghee, or grass-fed butter, may provide additional absorption benefits, and boost the brain fuel and satiation level that this caffeine-free latte can offer in the afternoon.
I like to keep a small glass jar with the spices for this recipe (in proper proportions) pre-mixed on my kitchen counter so that this golden spice latte is easy to pull together when the desire calls.Print
